The Nintendo game Breath of the Wild 2 is the sequel to the smash-hit Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It is expected to be released between October 2020 and March 2023. Released in 2017, Breath of the Wild garnered massive praise from its critics and appreciation from its fans. It showcased impressive visuals and fantastic open-world mechanics. Thus, the game has rightfully stolen the title of the best game of the Nintendo Switch platform. Thus, Breath of the Wild 2 has its fans worldwide holding their breaths.
Why Is the Legend of Zelda Franchise So Popular?
The first game of the Zelda series came out in 1986. Since then, the series has been quite successful with each released entry in the later years. The franchise is quite well known for its mixture of action, battle, exploration, and puzzle-solving. The players play as Link, a brave man with his iconic elf-like ears and green attire, and explore Hyrule’s world through him.
Each game has a different reincarnation of Link and other notable characters, like Princess Zelda. Therefore, each game has a different backstory of the characters. Due to this, people can play almost any game of the series without needing background knowledge about the series. All the Zelda games have a plot centered around Link saving the kingdom of Hyrule from the prime antagonist Ganon. Yet still, there is a streak of fans having their expectations met. This is because most other games with a similar genre would allow their side quests to overtake the main plot of the game. This makes the plot of the game more complex.
The Zelda series does not make this mistake. The games were true to the main plot and drove straight to the point in a simplistic manner. They allow the players to be deeply immersed in the game such that they feel the loss of certain NPC’s deaths. The players get to witness Link mature as a character and be emotionally attached to him. That’s why several of the titles of the series were considered the greatest video games of all time. It is one of the very few series that had perfect scores from critics.
The Success of Breath of the Wild
In 2017, people were blown away with Breath of the Wild. The game still allowed the players to hold the reigns in exploring the world of Hyrule with minimal instructions as it was in the previous games. There was no restriction on how the game was to be played. The players were free to figure out the game on their own and experiment with the tools available. These elements had amplified the game’s success with its visually rich environment of medieval western surroundings. The maps were beautifully detailed and filled with scenic greenery, where the players could explore for hours on end. The breath-taking details of the visuals with its smooth interface gave off a beautifully atmospheric and oddly nostalgic medieval feeling.
The battles were a blast of fun with various methods and techniques for the players to experiment with. Although the boss fights were quite reminiscent of the ones in the Witcher, there were still as fun. It showed how the developers were turning the genre around and succeeding in pleasing the fans. There was no one way to win the battles. However, the previously-mentioned elements were nothing new for the fans of Zelda. Breath of the Wild presented some unique elements such as detailed game physics and voice acting. The game physics allowed the player to utilize various game items in a different but logical way.
The game also had a unique “chemistry” engine, such as metal attracting lightning during thunderstorms. Players could make Link run, climb and glide but his stamina limited such physically strenuous activity. However, Link’s stamina can be increased by cooking various dishes, which the player can experiment with. Seriously, there is no limit to what you can experiment within this game.
Unlike the previous Legend of Zelda games, even the minor enemies pose some risk to Link if the player doesn’t use the right button combination while fighting. Moreover, the weapons and items could break or wear down and also served multiple purposes. This presented realism in the game that increased the players’ enjoyment. The game has so much to offer to the players other than its main plot, that it is quite easy to forget about Link having to save Hyrule from Ganon. That’s what sets this game apart from the others in its genre. It was not as linear and was very open-ended instead.
What to Expect From Breath of the Wild 2?
Breath of the Wild is the only Zelda game with its own sequel and will continue the plot. As mentioned before, each Zelda game had different reincarnations of Link and thus different backstory. However, Nintendo has confirmed that this time, that will not be the case. The Link from Breath of the Wild will continue his story in the sequel. Therefore, it appears that fans would need to be familiar with the Breath of the Wild before playing its sequel; Breath of the Wild 2.
The pressure on Nintendo is exceptionally high right now, after the massive success of Breath of the Wild. Expectations are now through the roof as it has already set the bar up quite high. It is often seen that highly anticipated games turn out to be a major let-down. After Shadow of the Colossus, fans were greatly disappointed with the extremely hyped-up game, The Last Guardian.
It was a glitchy mess, leaving everyone to wonder what on earth the developers did through the game’s nine-year development. Another typical case is that even if the game is quite good, it fails to exceed the fans’ expectations. It fails to excite them and so the game is marked as a let-down. Many fans have also expressed their desire to have a female playable character, whether if it is a female version of Link or a playable Zelda. Some have stated that with the gaming world growing more progressive, it is essential to emphasize female representation in the gaming world.
With the Zelda series having a reputation for a series of successes, it can be expected that they will not fail the fans, even if the stakes are too high.
